Winter storm snarls travel

(CNN) -- The powerful winter storm that moved across the United States this week, dropping record-breaking snow and spinning dangerous tornadoes on Christmas, isn't over yet.

It was dumping more snow on the Northeast on Thursday and leaving behind bitterly cold weather, especially in the South.

While the Northeast is used to dealing with heavy snow in late December, some parts of the country haven't seen this kind of weather in decades.

"This storm not only dumped snow in Southern areas that typically don't see such heavy snow -- especially in late December -- it did so in a short amount of time," CNN meteorologist Bonnie Schneider said. "The low was intense enough, along with other contributing factors, to bring blizzard conditions."

Fifteen people have been reported killed by a severe snow storm moving into north-eastern US states after disrupting Christmas in the Midwest.

States in New England are due to see heavy snowfall, with up to 18 inches of snow expected in parts of Maine, the National Weather Service said.
Flights were grounded and road collisions reported as the storm moved across the middle of the US.
As many as 34 tornadoes were reported across the South on Christmas Day.
The storm moved across the Upper Ohio Valley and into the US north-east on Wednesday night. Heavy snow was also reported in eastern parts of Canada.
Hundreds of thousands of people are reported to have lost power as a result of the storm, the Associated Press (AP) said.
Winter storm warnings issued by the National Weather Service on Thursday said temperatures could dip to nearly 20F (-6C) and warned of dangerous travel conditions with near-zero visibility on roads.
Storm-related deaths were reported in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Virginia, AP said.

As much as 12in to 18in (30.5cm to 46cm) of snow could fall in parts of Maine on Thursday, the latest weather advisory added.
Meanwhile, southern parts of the Canadian province of Quebec could receive up to 17in of snow, according to Environment Canada.
In Concord, New Hampshire, resident Dale Lamprey said he had been on the streets before 05:00 EST (10:00 GMT) on Thursday morning, trying to clear the snow.
"It's been windy, it's been snowing and I think it changed over to sleet and freezing rain at one point. It's pretty bad," he told AP.
Inbound flights were delayed in Philadelphia and at New York's LaGuardia airport, as thousands of travellers were trying to return home after Christmas.
Flights were also cancelled in Canada, with Toronto and Montreal affected, reports said.
Earlier in the week Little Rock, Arkansas, saw its first snow on Christmas Day in 83 years, while in neighbouring Oklahoma seven inches of snow were blamed for a 21-vehicle pile-up on an interstate highway outside Oklahoma City.
Thirty-four tornadoes were reported in the southern states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama on Tuesday. A large section of a church roof in Mobile, Alabama, was ripped off by a twister.
Falling trees claimed the lives of two people in Texas and Louisiana. Deaths were also reported on the roads in Oklahoma and Arkansas.

US actor Jack Klugman, who starred in hit TV series in the 1970s and 80s, has died at the age of 90.

He passed away in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon, his son Adam said, without giving further details.
Klugman played a no-nonsense medical investigator in Quincy M.E. and a sloppy sports writer in The Odd Couple.
The actor lost his voice to throat cancer in the 1980s but later trained himself to speak again. He returned to acting in the 1990s.
In his later years, he guest-starred on TV series including Third Watch and Crossing Jordan.
Off-screen, he owned racehorses and enjoyed gambling.
"The only really stupid thing I ever did in my life was to start smoking," he said in 1996. He said seeing people smoking on television and films "disgusts me, it makes me so angry - kids are watching".
'Great life' Klugman's first wife, actress-comedian Brett Somers, played his ex-wife, Blanche, in the Odd Couple series. They married in 1953 and had two sons, Adam and David, but had been estranged for years by the time of her death in 2007.
In February 2008, aged 85, Klugman married long-term partner Peggy Crosby, who was with him when he died Monday.
"He had a great life and he enjoyed every moment of it and he would encourage others to do the same," son Adam Klugman was quoted as saying by the Associated Press news agency.
His brother David added: "His sons loved him very much. We'll carry on in his spirit."
"RIP Jack Klugman. You made my whole family laugh together," actor-director Jon Favreau wrote on Twitter.
"He was a wonderful man and supremely talented actor," wrote actor Max Greenfield. "He will be missed."

A man alleged to have lured two US volunteer firefighters to their deaths in Webster, New York left a long note outlining his plans, police say.

No motive was given but the note left by William Spengler, identified as the gunman said he was planning to "do what I like doing best - killing people."
Police searching Spengler's burnt-out house say they have found human remains - believed to be those of his sister.
The firefighters were shot dead as they arrived to tackle a fire on Monday.
At a news conference on Tuesday, police said Spengler, 62, had three guns and aimed to burn down his neighbourhood.

William Spengler spent 17 years in prison for killing his grandmother

Seven homes on a narrow stretch of land beside Lake Ontario were destroyed by the fire. Another two firemen and an off-duty police officer were wounded in the attack.
Police Chief Gerald Pickering told reporters that Spengler, who apparently shot himself in the head, had used a .38 calibre revolver, a 12-gauge shotgun and a Bushmaster .223 calibre rifle with flash suppression.
The same make and calibre rifle had been used in the murder of 26 teachers and children at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut on 14 December, he said.
The police chief told reporters in Webster that a two- to three-page note from the gunman had been found in which he said: "I still have to get ready to see how much of the neighbourhood I can burn down and do what I like doing best - killing people."
At a later briefing, Mr Pickering said human remains were found in the house Spengler shared with his 67-year-old sister, Cheryl.
Police believe the remains are hers.
Spengler and his sister lived with their mother until her death in October.
'Clear ambush' Spengler had served 17 years in jail for killing his grandmother with a hammer but had done nothing to attract the authorities' attention since being granted parole in 1998.

As a convicted criminal, he was not allowed to own weapons.
Police said he appeared to have set "a trap" by setting fire to his home. His older sister, Cheryl, whom he reportedly hated, is missing.
Two of the firefighters who responded to the call, Tomasz Kaczowka, 19, and Mike Chiapperini, aged 43, were shot dead in what was described as a "clear ambush" on emergency services.
Their two wounded colleagues are said to be in a stable condition with gunshot wounds.
A police officer who came to their aid was praised by the police chief for saving people's lives.
Gerald Pickering cited "mental health issues" as a possible factor for the attack, which came months after the death of Spengler's mother.
The Newtown killer, Adam Lanza, killed his mother with her own guns before launching his attack on Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut.
His murders of 20 children aged six and seven have prompted a national debate on gun ownership and mental health.
"It's sad to see that that this is becoming more commonplace in communities across the nation," Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn told AP news agency after the attack in New York state.

An explosion in a warehouse has sparked a major fire in Lagos, Nigeria's largest city and commercial capital.

Officials said a building storing fireworks in the largest market area of Lagos Island exploded, and the ensuing blaze spread to up to nine buildings.
The blast reportedly shook windows of homes miles away and a thick cloud of smoke could be seen over the city.
Several people have been injured but it remains unclear if there were any fatalities.

A cloud of smoke billowed from the scene of the explosion, accompanied by the sparks of fireworks.
The sound of popping and crackling carried on as the fire raged on in this densely populated part of Lagos full of closely packed buildings in narrow streets.
Residents of the area told me they thought it was a bomb at first when blast shook buildings around Jankara Market, the largest in Lagos.
A few people showed me shrapnel wounds they got even though they were a fair distance from the explosion.
There was little the people could do but watch, with some trying to get photographs of the incident on their mobile phones.
Emergency workers say they had problems getting past the huge crowds of onlookers, similar to a complaint they raised in June when a plane crashed into a residential area in another part of Lagos.

Thousands of people in the area gathered to watch, as the fire destroyed neighbouring buildings.

Some residents jumped out of windows in panic as fireworks exploded long after the initial blaze, AFP news agency reported.
The BBC's Tomi Oladipo, who is at the scene, says he saw people with shrapnel wounds some distance from the fire and that it is quite likely anyone closer would have been worse affected.
The Nigerian Red Cross said it had treated at least 30 people, AFP reported.
Firefighters took about an hour to reach the scene, according to our correspondent, because of the huge crowds.
Some residents grabbed hoses from fire engines and tried to fight the blaze themselves, but the Associated Press reports that the engines quickly ran out of water.

Police and security officials recovered mortar-like fireworks and many empty firework shells from the scene, the agency said.
Our correspondent says that for years there have been calls for the ban of fireworks – which are widely used during the end-of-year holidays in Nigeria – but they have never been enforced.

(CNN) -- The masked gunman worked his way across the mall, terrifying holiday shoppers who had no clue where he'd fire next.

Entire swaths of Clackamas Town Center turned silent. The only sounds were the blasts from the man's rifle and the ensuing screams. Even the mall's Santa dropped to the ground.

"I thought I was going to die," mall employee David Moran said. "The gunshots were so loud, it was very scary. ... Kids were crying. Parents were crying, too."

Kira Rowland was holding her 6-month-old baby in Macy's when the shots rang out.

"I threw my baby into the stroller and just started running because everybody was screaming and everybody just started to run," she said.

Witnesses say at least 20 shots were fired Tuesday inside the mall, about 11 miles southeast of Portland, Oregon.

By the end of the rampage, three people lay dead, including the gunman from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. One young woman remains hospitalized, Clackamas County Undersheriff Matt Ellington said Wednesday morning.

The injured woman was identified as Kristina Shevchenko by officials at the Oregon Health and Science University Hospital. She remains in serious condition, the hospital said.

Authorities have not identified the other victims, pending notification of relatives. Investigators have tentatively identified the shooter, believed to be in his early 20s, but are not releasing his name until they get confirmation.

The gunman wore a hockey mask and jogged through Macy's wielding a rifle, a woman told 

As some panicked customers bolted for the exits, others ducked under store counters or hid behind racks of clothing.

The suspect announced aloud that "I am the shooter" as he ran through Macy's, said witness and store employee Austin Patty.

The shooter wore what looked like a hockey mask and a bulletproof vest, Patty said. He carried an assault rifle "like you would see in a video game."

As the shooting started, Patty ran out of the store, warning everyone in his path that there was a shooter on the loose and ordering them out of the store.

The sheriff's office could not confirm if the shooter had a bulletproof vest, but officials believe that a rifle was the weapon used, Ellington said.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage to get a better picture of what happened, he said.

Erin Quackenbush-Baker was in a more vulnerable position -- in the middle of the mall, at a kiosk with her grandmother and three young children.

"My 5-year-old was covering her ears and crying. I was frantic to find a place to run, and I looked back (at) my son in my stroller and glass is falling over us," she said. "The shots were getting closer, and it sounded like he was getting closer."

"I felt like sitting ducks, where we were."

During a brief halt in the gunfire, a man in black fleece helped rush the family into a nearby Sephora store. That's where Quackenbush-Baker and her children hid for an hour, "waiting to see if we were going to be shot or not."

As word spread that the shooter was moving from store to store, customers at Sears burst into tears, Christina Fisher told KOIN.

"We were told to stand in a group by the top of the escalators and stay away from the windows out of the aisle. ... We stood there for probably a good 20 minutes," she said. "All of the sudden, somebody came through with a radio, yelling, 'Get down!' "

As the melee unfolded, some customers watched television news reports about the shooting from inside the Sears entertainment center, Tylor Pedersen told affiliate KGW.

Antonio Charro spotted a wounded woman near a cell phone store and tried to help, but to no avail.

"She had apparently been shot in the chest, and I couldn't get her turned over to help her," said Charro, who had been shopping at the mall with his daughters. "There was no one around. She wasn't breathing."

Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts said about 10,000 people were in the mall at the time.

No law enforcement officers fired any shots when they arrived, sheriff's Sgt. Adam Phillips said.

The 1.4 million-square-foot mall will remain closed Wednesday as investigators look for clues about the attack. But the motive might never be known.

Rowland said she's grateful she got distracted while shopping and didn't venture further into the mall.

"I think if I hadn't stopped to smell that perfume, that maybe me and my baby wouldn't be here today."

After much consideration, "Parks and Recreation" star Aziz Ansari felt the song of the year should be awarded to a hip-hop artist. "Song of the year? Maybe 'Pop That,'" he said, referring to French Montana's first single from his debut studio album Excuse My French featuring Rick Ross, Drake and Lil Wayne.

The Argentine admitted that he had immediately feared that the injury was serious but was soon reassured by the Blaugrana doctors.
“The truth is that I didn’t really think about anything, because I was in so much pain, but I feared the worst. I thought that I might have to leave the ground,” Messi said. “I feared the worst when the doctors looked at it and examined me but, once they said it wasn’t serious, I felt a lot more relaxed.”
The Barca No. 10 was asked how he felt being played in a game with nothing riding on it, but he claimed to be happy to be on the field, regardless of the game’s importance.
“When you go out onto any pitch there is always the risk something can happen to you,” Messi said. “(Pep) Guardiola used to play me in these games, and as long as I can play and Tito allows me to play in these games, I will continue to do so.”

A 7.3-magnitude quake strikes off Japan's northeastern coast, temporarily triggering some tsunami waves reaching up to three feet, but there was no concern of a widespread tsunami. TODAY's Erica Hill reports.

Updated at 5:40 a.m. ET: Tsunami waves up to 3 feet high hit the coast of Japan Friday, after a strong earthquake in the sea that shook buildings 300 miles away in Tokyo.

The temblor was registered at a magnitude of 7.3 and struck at 5:18 p.m. local time (3:18 a.m. ET), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake hit in the same area as the devastating quake and tsunami in March last year that killed nearly 20,000 people and triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years.
Friday's quake struck about 200 miles southeast of Kamaishi, the USGS said. The epicenter was 6.2 miles beneath the seabed, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Buildings in Tokyo swayed for at least several minutes, but there were no early reports of damage or injuries.
Coastal residents told to flee to higher ground
NHK television broke off regular programming to warn that a strong quake was due to hit shortly before the impact was felt. Afterward, the announcer repeatedly urged all near the coast to flee to higher ground.
The quake triggered a tsunami warning for the Miyagi Prefecture, which was at the center of the 2011 disaster. It also sparked tsunami advisories for Pacific Coast areas of several other prefectures.
But by 5:20 a.m. ET, two hours after the quake, the Japan Meteorological Agency had canceled all tsunami advisories and warnings.

Still, a batch of tsunami waves, measuring about 3 feet tall, hit the town of Ishinomaki, in Miyagi Prefecture, about an hour after the earthquake, according to Japanese television. Another tsunami wave, measuring about a foot tall, was detected at Ofunato.

"I was in the center of the city the very moment the earthquake struck. I immediately jumped into the car and started running away towards the mountains. I'm still hiding inside the car," Ishinomaki resident Chikako Iwai told Reuters.
"I have the radio on and they say the cars are still stuck in the traffic. I'm planning to stay here for the next couple of hours," Iwai said.
A 6.2-magnitude aftershock struck at about 3:31 a.m. ET, but no damage or injuries were immediately reported.
